World Turtle Day

May 23: World Turtle Day. This day was created to increase knowledge and respect for turtles and tortoises, and to also encourage human action to help them survive and thrive. It is celebrated worldwide in a variety of ways, from dressing up as turtles, to saving turtles caught on highways. The nonprofit corporation, American Tortoise Rescue, has been the sponsor for this day since 2000.

Favorite colors: A preference turtles are able to have. Turtles are visually-oriented creatures that rely on sight to identify other members of the same species, food, and potential dangers, such as predators. Research shows that turtles can perceive colors, but that certain colors – red, orange, and yellow – seem to be the most appetizing to them. When turtles see an object in one of those shades, they display “investigative behavior,” which suggests that they’re checking it out to see if they want to eat it.

Temperature: The deciding factor of a turtle’s sex. The temperature at which you incubate a snapping turtle’s egg plays a role in determining the sex of the turtle. Eggs typically need to be incubated in the 80-degree range, but eggs hatched at cooler temperatures tend to produce males, and those at higher temperatures produce females.

Laziest Freshwater Turtle: The title given to the giant soft-shelled turtle of the Mekong River in Cambodia by Guinness World Records. This type of species spends 95 percent of its life motionless in the sand.

Hinged shell: The most famous attribute of the box turtle. This type of shell allows box turtles to retract almost completely into their bony armor to hide from danger. Also, this shell has great regenerative powers. A case was reported in which the shell of a badly burned box turtle underwent complete regeneration.
