Happy Birthday, Erno Rubik!

July 13: The birthdate of Erno Rubik. Born in 1944, Rubik is a Hungarian mathematician and inventor who invented the widely popular mechanical puzzle known as the Rubik’s Cube. He wanted a working model to help explain three-dimensional geometry and ended up creating the world’s best selling toy. The Rubik’s Cube is a 3-inch by 3-inch by 3-inch cube, consisting of 26 smaller cubes that rotate on a central axis. In its completed form, one different color appears on each side. Before that stage, however, a person must try to rotate any side to rearrange the colors so that each side is composed of only one solid color.

One month: The time it took Erno Rubik to solve his cube. A professor of architecture, Rubik built his twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side to see if it was possible to design blocks that could move without causing the entire structure to collapse. After he rotated a few rows and mixed up the colors, his challenge began: realign the hues. It took him about a month to restore the cube to its pristine condition.

43,252,003,274,489,856,000: The number of possible configurations of the Rubik’s Cube. To put this number into perspective, if a person turned the Rubik’s Cube once every second, it would take him 1,400 trillion years to finish and go through all of the configurations.

Cubaholics: The name given to those obsessed with the Rubik’s Cube. Many of the real Cubaholics are said to suffer from Rubik’s wrist and Cubist’s thumb.

The Big Lebowski: In an early draft of this movie, it was revealed that the dude’s income came from his status as an heir to the inventor of the Rubik’s Cube. But Joel Coen cut that detail out, deciding it was best to keep the audience guessing.
